Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal (1897-1984)

Indian Women in Science & technology

Janaki Ammal was born in the year 1897, in Tellichery, Kerala, in a cultured middle-class family. Her father was a sub-judge in what was then the Madras Presidency. She had six brothers and five sisters. After schooling in Tellichery, she moved to Madras where she obtained the bachelor’s degree from Queen Mary’s College, and an honours degree in Botany from Presidency College in 1921.

She lived up to her own definition of greatness which combined virtue in life and passion in the pursuit of her science. There is thus much for us to emulate in her life and work.

B Vijayalakshmi (1952-1985)

Indian Women in Science & Technology

Born into a conservative family, she obtained her Masters from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami CollegeTiruchirapalli in 1974 and joined the Department of Theoretical Physics. In 1982, she completed a Ph.D from Madras University, and soon met and married T. Jayaram.

B. Vijayalakshmi’s studies explored the topics of relativistic equations of higher spin in external electromagnetic and gravitational fields, looking for ways higher spin theories could be constructed. Soon after she worked on spinning particle in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. It was around 1978 when the Association of Research Scholars of the Madras University was formed and was contributed to by B. Vijayalakshmi. In 1980 she gave talks at the biannual High Energy Physics Symposium of the Department of Atomic Energy held at the University in Kochi. She was treated with high regard after this and respect for her studies. Although her health deteriorated due to cancer she published five publications on the relativistic wave equations in external fields and completed her requirements for Ph.D., describing large classes of relativistic equations previously unknown to the scientific community. As supersymmetry became more popular her work shifted and she wrote two papers on the topic. For more than two more years B. was studying relativistic equations from different angles.

B. Vijayalakshmi died on 12 May 1985.

Sashi Kumar created a documentary about her life called “Vijayalakshmi: The Story of a Young Woman with Cancer”.

Anandibai Joshi (1865-1887)

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi (31 March 1865 – 26 February 1887) was the first Indian female practitioner of western medicine, alongside Kadambini Ganguly. She was the first woman from the erstwhile Bombay presidency of India to study and graduate with a two-year degree in western medicine in the United States.

Originally named Yamuna, Joshi was born, raised and married in Kalyan where her family had previously been landlords before experiencing financial losses. As was the practice at that time and due to pressure from her mother, she was married at the age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi, a widower almost twenty years her senior. After marriage, Yamuna’s husband renamed her ‘Anandi’. Gopalrao Joshi worked as a postal clerk in Kalyan. Later, he was transferred to Alibag, and then, finally, to Kolkata (Calcutta). He was a progressive thinker, and, unusually for that time, supported education for women.

At the age of fourteen, Anandibai gave birth to a boy, but the child lived only for a total of ten days due to lack of medical care. This proved to be a turning point in Anandi’s life and inspired her to become a physician. After Gopalrao tried to enroll her in missionary schools and not working out, they moved to Calcutta. There she learned to read and speak Sanskrit and English.

The Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS), a non-governmental organization from Lucknow, has been awarding the Anandibai Joshi Award for Medicine in honour of her early contributions to the cause of advancing medical science in India. In addition, the Government of Maharashtra has established a fellowship in her name for young women working on women’s health. A crater on Venus has been named in her honour. The 34.3 km-diameter crater on Venus named ‘Joshee’ lies at latitude 5.5° N and longitude 288.8° E.

On 31 March 2018, Google honored her with a Google Doodle to mark her 153rd birth anniversary.

Srinivasa Ramanujan: The Man Who Knew Infinity

Srinivasa Ramanujan is one of the world’s greatest mathematicians, and he is known for his great work done in his field. He made many of his theories very popular in the world. This is why his principles are still used in many countries.

Early Life

He was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Also, he is known for many contributions made in the theory of numbers. It is very startling for many people, but in the beginning, Ramanujan never studied mathematics. He studied mathematics and became its expert in the latter part of his education.

Srinivasa Ramanujan studied some books written by international mathematicians, and after a few years, he made many of his theories on mathematics.

Ramanujan was very poor, and he did various research only under bad circumstances, but later he was supported by Ram Chandra Rao and his clerical job, due to which he was able to learn more and invent many new studies on mathematics.

Adulthood

In 1914, he won a scholarship to England and studied hard under Godfrey. He worked hard and also invented various other theories. Ramanujan surprised every teacher with the knowledge of mathematics. Also, he never knew the modern techniques of mathematics. But, at that time he still performed better than many professors and researchers.

He invented many theories, and the most famous ones are followed: Ramanujan continuously, Mok Live work, Ramanujan estimation, Ramanujan Pradhan, Ramanujan Live ceremony, Ramanujan’s zodiac, Ramanujan’s set series, etc. He also won the companionship of the royal society.

He worked for a very short period because he was only 32 years old, but his teachings are still alive in many people’s minds and textbooks. So, this country was about Srinivasa Ramanujan, the country’s best mathematician.

Practicals

Separate behavior from the student

This is nothing innovative, yet we tend to fall into the trap of identifying students according to some behaviors that they exhibit in class. There is a good student and a problem student. The problem with labels (aside from the fact that they belong on jars, not on students) is that students will internalize and identify with the said label. This can in turn become a self-fulfilling prophecy, not to mention that it will also alter your own perceptions and expectations of your students. Other negative aspects are lower confidence in themselves and lower confidence in their academic skills. Instead, one of the building blocks of a good relationship with students is separating what they do vs. who they are as a person.

Online Education at Aparnaa World School

We all aware the COVID-19 has resulted in schools shuting down all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of their classrooms. As a result education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of online teaching or online education during lockdown where teaching is done remotely and on online teaching platforms. So, in this Pandamic situation, schools of globe has adopted online classes to reach out to the students. Keeping in this mind Aparnaa World School has promoted online teaching through.

No doubt, it is different and difficult to teach the students through online teaching tools but it is the best way to communicate with students during this Pandamic period of COVID-19, so that the students may acquire sufficient knowledge having proper communication with their own class or subject teachers.

Aparnaa world School started with researching online teaching ideas to help out the students and parents by compiling the lesson- Note, Assignment & Videos of all the classes from class 1-12. Related videos of all the chapters have been linked so that the students have the clarification about the topic they are being taught. School has decided to send the work in phase wise. 1st phase work has been given in three parts. All the teachers helped the students daily from 9 am- 5pm through call or by WhatsApp to clarify the doubts of the students.

To check whether the students are working on the task or not, the school has given submission deadline date followed by marking system for the assessments. Hopefully, we achieved the result we expected. The submission of assessments were up to mark by the students. So, we decided to follow the same system until this crisis of COVID-19 period. Hopefully there will be some more changes to give the best to the students.

Now the school is planning to introduce Online streamed classes through Google Classrooms & Google Meet in which there will be direct interaction between the students and respective subject teachers. It is a free collaboration tool for students and teachers. Here, teachers will create an online classroom, invite students to class then create and distribute assignments. Teachers will monitor the progress for each student by receiving revision history of a document and after being graded, teacher will return work with comments.

The learning process is to be seen more effective by our school. Once the students and teachers are on the same platform, they can immediately work on the materials and instructions. So, Aparnaa world School will be planning some more convenient solutions to minimize any sort of miscommunication between the students and teachers to make sure that the result is effective.
